How to Play French Tarot

A compact reference for the standard French Tarot game using a 78-card deck. The scorer supports 3-, 4- and 5-player tables and keeps the score zero-sum after every hand.

styleDeck & Bouts

The deck contains 56 suited cards, 21 numbered trumps and the Excuse. Three special cards—the Petit (Trump 1), Trump 21 and Excuse—are the bouts (oudlers).

The number of bouts held by the attacking side determines the number of card points it needs.

gavelContracts

Bids increase through Prise, Garde, Garde Sans and Garde Contre. Their score multipliers are 1×, 2×, 4× and 6× respectively.

On Prise or Garde, the taker uses the chien and makes an écart. On Garde Sans the chien belongs to the taker unseen; on Garde Contre it belongs to the defence.

calculateBasic Score

First calculate 25 + the absolute margin from the target. Apply the contract multiplier, then apply any Petit au Bout, Poignée and Chelem adjustments.

In a four-player game, each defender gains or loses the hand value and the taker receives the opposite total (three times that value).

looks_onePetit au Bout

If the Petit is in the final trick, the side winning that trick receives a 10-point bonus multiplied by the contract multiplier. It applies according to who wins the Petit au Bout, even if that side loses the contract overall.

back_handPoignée

A declared Poignée gives the side that wins the hand an additional bonus. In the standard four-player game: single +20, double +30, triple +40. Required trump counts vary with player count.

workspace_premiumChelem

Taking every trick is a Chelem. An announced and made Chelem adds 400; an unannounced but made Chelem adds 200; an announced but failed Chelem costs 200. A Chelem made by the defence awards the defence 200 in addition to the normal score.

groups3, 4 & 5 Players

At 3 players the taker's result is twice each defender's. At 4 players it is three times each defender's. At 5 players the taker normally calls a partner: the attacking gain/loss is split 2/3 to the taker and 1/3 to the partner. If the taker plays alone, they receive the full result against four defenders.
